Abdul Amir Qabalan, Deputy President
of the Higher Islamic Shiite Council
Place
and Date of Birth: Born in Meis Al Jabal, South Lebanon, in 1936. Son of Shiite
Religious Authority Sheikh Mohammad Ali Qabalan
Education: Commenced his studies of Islamic Law and Theology in Najaf,
Iraq, at the age of 16. Studied at the hands of great Islamic scholars like Imam Mohsen Al
Hakim, and renown religious authorities like Abu Al Qassem Al Khoei and Ayatullah Mohammad
Taqi Al Jawahri, and earned high religious certifications.
Career: In 1957, Qabalan was appointed director of religious affairs in
the town of Graf near Nasiriyyah, Iraq, where he taught Islamic theology. Qabaln then
returned to Lebanon in 1963, and became Imam of Burj Al Barajinah Mosque . In 1970, he
became president of the Jaafrite Jurisdiction in Lebanon. In 1994, he became first vice
president of the Higher Islamic Shiite Council, then headed by the late Imam Mohammad
Mahdi Shamseddine.
