Brief Biography
Place & Date of Birth: Born
in Tannourine, Batroun, North Lebanon, on August 8, 1941. Son of Joseph El Khouri Harb and
Najiba Rouhana Saqr (sister of former MP Emile Rouhana Saqr).

Marital Status: Married to Marlene Tabet with three children, Majd (13
years), and two twin daughters, Noura and Hala (10 years).
Educational Background: Bachelor of Laws from Saint Joseph University in
Beirut(1965). During his university years, Harb worked as teacher of civil education.
After graduation, he practiced law at the law office of Joseph Mghabghab (his uncle's
friend and his then comrade at the National Liberal Party), then he opened his own law
office. Earlier on, he completed his elementary education at the Myriamite Brethren School
in Jbeil (Byblos), his intermediary education at the Carmelite Fathers Institute in
Tripoli, North Lebanon, and his secondary education at the Furn El Shebbak Public School
in Beirut.
Profession: Lawyer, politician.
Political Background: At the age of 28, Harb succeeded his uncle Jean
Harb who was Batroun's MP for four succesive terms (1953-1968). He was elected Batroun
deputy for the period 1972-1992, reelected in1996 and 2000. Reelected in 2005 in alliance
with the Bristol Gathering alliance which grouped Saad Hariri's Future Movement, Qornet
Shehwan Gathering Jublat's Democratic Gathring, and the Lebanese Forece. Minister of
Public Works, National Education and Fine Arts (July 1979 to July 1980), Minister of
National Education and Fine Arts (December 24, 1990 to May 16, 1992). In September 1989,
he participated in the Taif meetings in Saudi Arabia, and was a member of the Committee of
the Sixteen, which drew the final version of Taif National Accord. Harb is also a member
of the Qornet Shehwan Gathering, and member of the Qornet Shehwan Parliamentary Bloc.Harb
started his political career in the opposition with the Constitutional Party. He later
became a supporter of late President Camille Chamoun, and joined Chamoun's National
Liberal Party without encouraging his followers and relatives to follow suit.
Political Aspirations: Boutros Harb is a presidential hopeful. In 1998,
his name was among the leading candidates. At that time, he declared his candidacy,
refusing to amend the Constitution. He also declared his candidcay in 2004 in a stylish
press conference at the Parliament House where he announced his program.
