& Date of Birth: Born in Beirut on February 16, 1928. His father, Salim Edde,
worked as translator for the Wali (governor) of Beirut during the Ottoman era, and manager
of the Bank of Syria and Lebanon.
Sect: Maronite.
Marital Status: Married to Yolla Doumit with five children. His daughter,
Isabelle, is married to Philip Helou, son of late MP Pierre Helou, with 5 children.
Educational background: Bachelor of Laws from the French Faculty of Law
in Beirut (1948). Pursued earlier studies at the Jesuit School of Beirut.
Professional Background: Practiced law with special focus on the
financial, economic, commercial, and freight domains. CEO for a number of international
firms in Africa, Latin America and Brazil. Chairman of "L'Orient-Le Jour" French
daily newspaper. President of the Jesuit Alumni Association in Lebanon since 1990.
Political Background: President of the Maronite League since 2003.
Minister of PTT and Minister of Information in Omar Karame's government (December
24, 1990 to May 10, 1992). Minister of Information in Chafic Wazzan Government (October
25, 1980 to September 24, 1982). Minister of Culture and Higher
Education in Rafic Hariri's second government (May 25, 1995 to November 6 1996). Minister
of State in Rafic Hariri's third government (November 7, 1996 to December 3, 1998).
Current Status: Chairman of the Maronite League.
Publications: Author of a number of books, articles, and lectures dealing
with the Palestinian issue, South Lebanon, the Lebanese waters, and Israeli affairs..
