Gharib, New York-based co-anchor of Public Television's Nightly Business Report, has been
named winner of the 2001 "Gracie" Award in the Anchor category, beating out
other network and cable anchors of news or newsmagazine programs.
The Gracies are awarded annually by the Foundation of American Women in Radio and
Television (AWRT). Gharib was among distinguished company when she was honored along with
Rosie O'Donnell, Dateline reporter Sara James, actress Lisagay Hamilton, sportscaster
Donna deVerona and the programs "Sex and the City" and "Everybody Loves
Raymond." She was cited for her hard-hitting interviews with three top corporate
CEOs: Microsoft's Bill Gates, AT&T's Michael Armstrong and General Electric's Jack
Welch.
The 26th Annual Gracie Allen Awards were handed out on May 31st at a black tie affair at
the Plaza Hotel in New York City. Nightly Business Report has won both GracieTM and AWRT
awards in previous years' competitions.
The Gracie is named after the comedienne who was a pioneer
in radio and television with her husband, George Burns. It is given for broadcasting that
demonstrates "superior quality" and "stellar portrayal of the changing
roles and concerns of women." Nightly Business Report is television's most watched
daily business news program. The award-winning program is produced by NBR
Enterprises/WPBT2 Miami and distributed by American Public Television. NBR is nationally
underwritten by A.G. Edwards, Inc., Compaq Computer Corporation, Franklin Templeton
Investments and Deloitte & Touche. American Women in Radio and Television (AWRT) is a
national, nonprofit organization that extends membership to qualified professional women
and men in the electronic media and allied fields.
