Biqaa MP Robert Ghanem

ghanem_robert.gif (10548 bytes) Place & Date of Birth: Born in Saghbine, West Biqaa, on June 18, 1942. Son of former Army commander General Iskandar Ghanem, and Laarice Khouri.
Sect: Maronite
Marital Status: Married in 1975 to Viviane Haddad, and has two sons, Alexandre and Nadeem.
Educational Background: B.A. in French and Lebanese Law from St. Joseph University's Faculty of Law. He received his Baccalaureate from Notre Dame de Jamhour Jesuit School.
Profession: Lawyer and parliamentarian. Admitted to the Beirut Bar Association and opened hsi own law office in 1969. In 1978, he established a law office in Paris and worked as for over 15 years as legal counsellor for multinational corporations. Board member of several prominent international and national companies.
Political Background: Elected Biqaa MP in 1992, 1996, releected in 2000. Minister of National Education, Youth and sports, 1995-1996. During his office as Minister, he completely reformed the educational system that had been in place since 1968 in order to meet the new standards of education and bridge the gap between secondary studies, higher education and the workplace. He also established a program of civic education to foster a sense of civic responsibility among the Lebanese youth.  He participated in several inter-parliamentary sessions since 1964 as  delegation secretary, and since 1995 in governmental and parliamentary delegations in Europe, Japan, China and the Middle-East.   Member of the West Biqaa and Rachaya parliamentary bloc.Earlier career included working as counsellor for the Minister of National Education in 1970, and for the Minister of Labour and Social Affairs in 1976.
