Place and Date of Birth: Born in Kharkila, Merjayoun, in
1935. Son of Ali Hammoud.

Marital status: Married with one son.
Education: Degree
in Law from the Lebanese University and Saint-Joseph University. MA in Psychology. MA in
Literature from the Lebanese University .
Professional Career: Diplomat. Charge d'affaires at the Lebanese
Consulate in Rabat, Morocco and Turkey, 1963. Counsellor at the Lebanese Embassy in
London, 1973-1975. Counsellor at the Lebanese Embassy in Paris 1975-1978 where he was
nominated Ambassador. Ambassador at the Lebanese Embassy in the United Arab Emirates
(1978-1983). Ambassador at the Lebanese Embassy in Bonn 1983-1985. Director of the
Economic Affairs at the Central Administration 1985-86. Ambassador at the Lebanese Embassy
in Moscow and Finland (1986-1990). Ambassador at the Lebanese Embassy in Great Britain and
North Ireland (1990-1999) - during this period he was appointed dean of the diplomatic
corps in London. Participated in eight sessions of the
United Nations General Assembly, and in the Lebanese delegation of the UNCTAD Conference
in 1972. In 1999, he was appointed member of the Economic and Social Council. On 2 June
2000, he was appointed Director General of that council.
Political Career: Appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs and Emigrants in
Rafic Hariri's fourth cabinet (October 26, 2000 - April 15, 2003). Appointed Minister of
Defense in Rafic Hariri's fifth cabinet (April 17, 2003 - October 26, 2004). Appointed
Minister of Foreign Affairs and Emigrants in Omara Karami's cabinet (October 26, 2000 -
April 19, 2005 ). Appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs
and Emigrants in Najib Mikati's 's cabinet (April 19, 2005 - ).
