Adnan Qassar,
Minister of Economy
and Trade, Banker and Businessman
Place and Date of Birth: Born in
Beirut in 1930. Son of Wafic Qassar and Chafica Diab. His father, Wafic, was a judge, a
former ambassador of Lebanon to Pakistan and Turkey, founder and first dean of the Faculty
of Law at the Lebanese University, honorary chairman of the Council of State, and member
of the Academy of Islamic Studuies at Cairo.
Sect: Sunnite
Married to: Raeda Miskawi with one daughter, Roula.
Education: Bachelor of Laws in 1951 from Lebanon's Saint Joseph
University.
Professional Background: President of the Paris-based International
Chamber of Commerce, President of the Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture of
Beirut and Mount Lebanon, member of The Board of Directors of the Association of Banks in
Lebanon. He also served as president of the General Union of Arab Chambers of Commerce,
Industry and Agriculture and is now its permanent vice president.
Current Occupation: Chairman and CEO of Fransabank Group, one of
Lebanons leading banks with $2.67 billion in assets, 48 branches in Lebanon and
affiliates in France, Hungary, Zaire, Hong Kong and Cuba. He is also the chairman of
Fransabank Holding Co., based in Luxemburg and the founder and partner in Adnan & Adel
Kassar enterprises, which became an important trading company particularly with Hungary
and China.
Political Career: Appointed Minister of Economy and Trade in Omar
Karami's government, formed on October 26, 2004.
