EU condems 'vicious campaign' of assassination in Lebanon

BRUSSELS - EU leaders condemned Friday what they branded a "vicious campaign" of assassination targeting Lebanese politicians, citizens and journalists, according to draft conclusions of a Brussels summit.

They said the murder Monday of Gibran Tueni and three others in a car bomb in a Beirut suburb was "the latest in a vicious campaign" that was also aimed at freedom of expression.

The summit's draft conclusions also noted "with extreme concern" a second report of a UN investigation into the slaying earlier this year of the former Lebanese prime minister Rafiq Hariri, which cited fresh evidence that implicated Syrian officers.

The leaders voiced their concern at Syria's "incomplete cooperation" and called on Damascus to work unconditionally with investigators.

The blast that killed Tueni was the 13th such attack since the bombing that killed Hariri in February and plunged Lebanon into chaos not seen since the 1975-1990 civil war.
