Rahhal expects assassinations in Lebanon

BEIRUT - Future bloc MP Riad Rahhal said in remarks published on Friday that some political assassinations might take place in Lebanon “in order to cause chaos due to the international pressure being put on the Syrian regime.”

Rahhal’s statements were made after media reports surfaced on Thursday there was an assassination plot against Kataeb bloc MP Sami Gemayel.

Rahhal told Al-Mustaqbal newspaper that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad “has lost all his cards and due to this, he will use [Lebanon] through Hezbollah and all the other militant parties [ in the country]” to evade the pressure imposed on his regime.

The Lebanese political scene is split between supporters of Assad’s regime, led by the Shia group Hezbollah, and the pro-Western March 14 alliance.

Lebanon has refrained from supporting decisions taken by the Arab League against the Syrian Baath regime.

Rahhal also commented, during the interview, on reports that claimed the presence of Free Syrian Free Army members and Al-Qaeda in North Lebanon.

“[These are] rumors that require the Lebanese government and army to take immediate action,” Rahhal said.

The MP added that the government “needs to order the Lebanese army to arrest the terrorists if they are present [in northern Lebanon].” -Now Lebanon
