Solana reiterates EU support for Lebanon's sovereignty, indepenence

European Union foreign and security policy chief Javier Solana on Friday reiterated the EU's support for Lebanon's sovereignty and independence.

Solana, who arrived earlier in Beirut for a whirlwind visit, said the EU always stands with the Lebanese government and its people.

"We want to prove to Lebanon our support in establishing strong relations on political and economic levels between Lebanon and the European Union," Solana said in a joint press conference with Lebanese prime Minister Foaud Seniora.

He urged Syria to accept UN Resolution 1636 and to cooperate with the investigation into former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafiq Hariri's assassination.

Syria should also seriously implement UN Resolution 1559, which calls for the disarmament of all militias in Lebanon, including the pro-Syria Hezbollah and Palestinian military groups.

"All UN resolutions should be implemented and everybody should cooperate with the UN Security Council and the United Nations," Solana said.

Hezbollah, the only political party with an armed wing at present in Lebanon, says that it will not drop its weapons as long as Shebaa Farms is occupied by Israel.

Lebanese Foreign Minister Fawzi Salloukh also argued last week that Hezbollah was a security force in the south of the country.

"Hezbollah is not a militia group but a military force against foreign occupation," he said.
