| UK confirms talks
underway to adopt Security Council resolution on Syria UNITED NATIONS, Oct 20 (KUNA) - British Ambassador Emyr Jones Parry on Wednesday confirmed press reports that London, Washington and Paris are contemplating introducing two resolutions in the Security Council next week holding Syria to account for meddling in Lebanon and for the alleged links to the assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri. "There are a number of things under discussion and we are part of them...We are working very closely," Parry told reporters. Independent investigator Detlev Mehlis is due to present to the council his report on the investigation he conducted into Hariri's assassination by the end of this week. Terje Roed Larsen, UN special envoy for resolution 1559, is also scheduled to report on whether Syria has completely disengaged from Lebanon, including the disarmament of Hizbullah and of Palestinian factions there. Asked if the talks include sanctions against Syria, Parry said the three council permanent members are discussing a "comprehensive response to a possible report. How that goes depends crucially on what Mehlis reports and also on what we see by their (Syrians) behaviour". "We will take into account those factors when we come to draft a resolution or more resolutions," he said. A Russian representative told reporters that his delegation has not been approached on this matter and that when it does, his delegation will study it "very carefully," he said emphatically. US, UK and France want to rush the resolutions before the end of this month because Russia takes up the council presidency starting November 1st. |
