| Mehlis report could
backfire on its supporters: report Should the German prosecutor in charge of the UN investigation into the former Premier Rafik Hariris murder Detlev Mehlis submit a report that lacks any incriminating evidence against any political entities that anti-syrian forces had so far pointed the finger at, then accusers will lose their credibility, Ad Diyar daily reported Monday. Despite all the hoopla surrounding the Palestinian situation in Lebanon, all eyes will shift on the upcoming Mehlis report due for release on October 21st, and which carries findings of such serious magnitude that it could have local, regional and internatinal repercussions. All the accusations based on insider information leaked to the press will simply disintegrate, Lebanese political sources told the daily. The sources said that the internal political scene will in that event witness a climate change, where pro-Syrian allies will stop the waiting game and move from a defensive political position an offensive one. A ministerial source close to the majority in Parliament told the daily that Lebanon would enter a new phase following Mehlis report in order to re-evaluate the policies adopted throughout the investigation. the report could initiate a new phase of political alliances, which could look much different than they are today, the minister said. Syrian Defense Minister Hasan Turkmani said yesterday that his country is committed to maintaining its sisterly relations with Lebanon, despite misguided media campaigns against Syria and its nationalistic ideology, which I judge are aimed at holding Syria accountable for Hariris murder and other security issues such as bombings and assassination attempts, and this regardless of the amount of cooperation and good faith we have shown so far. |
