Palestinians into Lebanon reported BEIRUT, Lebanon, October 3 (Lebanonwire) -- Lebanese security forces and eyewitnesses both reported that a Palestinian organization based in Damascus smuggled into Lebanon two trucks loaded with weapons and ammunitions through Syria on Saturday, AL Balad daily reported Monday. Eyewitnesses told Agence France Press that the trucks did not carry license plates and had crossed a land passage usually closed to commuters between Lebanon and Syria, confirming security sources reports of similar activity in the area situated two kilometers faway from the Syrian border in the Northern Bekaa. The sources said the trucks emptied their cargo at two bases for the Palestinian group called Fath-Al Intifada, a pro-Syrian Palestinian organization that broke away from the P.L.O. The bases are located in Yanta village in Southern Bekaa, just 40 kilometers from the Lebanese Israeli border. Abu Khaled Al Amla, a high ranking official with the group denied Sunday what Lebanese security forces reported and eyewitness accounts of the arms smuggling. We have no involvement whatsoever regarding the rumors circulating around us smuggling weapons and/or armed militia into Lebanon," Abu Khaled said in an interview with AFP in Damascus. Abu Khaled said the information was utterly false adding we havnt brought in any weapons since 1983 and we havnt established any new bases in Lebanon. We remain in Palestinian camps and the Lebanese authorities are aware of that. Abu Khaled said that the organizations only wish is for the security and stability of Lebanon and all this boils down to accusations aimed at hurting the Palestinian cause, which some consider as the weakest link.Abu Khaled said that our weapons are there to serve Lebanons stability and security as well as to protect the camps |
