Syria, Iran sending recruits to Lebanon for future missions: paper

BEIRUT, Lebanon, October 1 (Lebanonwire) --A Lebanese security source revealed to Italian News Agency Aki that Syria and Iran are recruiting men and infiltrating them into Lebanon for future missions, Al-Seyassah online daily reported today.

The source said that there are enough guns and ammunition in Lebanon, but not enough recruits to perform “yet unclear duties”.

Large caches of weapons were discovered in Beirut and Bchamoun and were linked to the brother of Mustafa Hamdan, head of the presidential guard units in charge of protecting President Emile Lahoud.

The Syrian-Lebanese border had witnessed an unusual activity by Lebanese security officers and an increase in the number of customs agents, combined with frequent helicopter reconnaissance over the area. Security forces also announced earlier this week that it had apprehended 12 Palestinians who were illegally trespassing into Lebanon.

The daily said that General Michel Chakkour, head of the internal security forces in the Bekaa, alluded to the need of remapping the area with Syria to limit such border breaches, which he described as “flagrant”, suggesting increasing patrols along the border crossing.
