Authors of UN 1559 form a joint committee in New York

BEIRUT, Lebanon, Sept 18 (Lebanonwire) -- Lebanese expatriates who played a big role in writing the articles of UN 1559, which calls for the withdrawal of Syrian forces from Lebanon and the disarmament of all militia groups, created a committee in New York to track the resolution's full implementation, Elaph online daily reported.

The committee’s first activity began by meeting with UN special envoy to the Middle East Terje Rod Larsen at the UN headquarters in New York, presenting him with a memorandum of their activity entitled: “The Full Implementation of UN 1559”.

The committee calls for the disarming of Hizbullah and all Palestinian factions in Lebanon, and expressed its belief that clandestine Revolutionary Iranian Guards forces are operating in the country. It further requested that the Lebanese army be deployed in the South.

Larsen told the committee that the UN body is focusing on the Hariri murder investigation, adding that he would delay his report on the implementation of the resolution until the UN investigative team headed by Detev Mehlis issues their findings, Elaph said of the committee’s first report.

According to the same report, Larsen said there is “a new political phase in Lebanon and Syria as a result of the investigation” and that Mehlis’s report will have a significant impact on which court will take over the proceedings.

The founding committee named Atef  Harb as its secretary general and announced that as a non-governmental organization, it will create subsidiary committees before the end of this month.

Other members of the committeeinclude Sami Khoury (Ecuador), Jo Beaini, (Australia), lawyer John Hajjar (U.S.), Dr. Rashid Rahme (Britain), Charbel Barakat (Canada), Joseph Saooq (Sweden), Eugene Khayyat (South Africa), lawyer Claudia Shater (Brazil), Elias Abboud (Argentine), Dr. Carlos Keyrouz (Belgium), Dr. Simon Salameh (France), engineer Tony Nissi (Lebanon), lawyer Joanne Fakhr (U.S.) and advisor professor Walid Phares (U.S.).
