Lebanese authorities confirm arrest of Mossad spy in Nabatiyeh

BEIRUT - Security officials have confirmed reports of the arrest of an Israeli spy who may have conducted espionage during the July war with Israel in 2006.

A security official identified the man as Kamal Faqih, a petrol station owner from Nabatiyeh. "He is with Army Intelligence. The investigations are focusing on how much he was involved in spy work during the war with Israel in 2006," the official told The Daily Star.

The source said Hezbollah had played a role in discovering Faqih's secret double life after becoming suspicious of his behavior. "Hezbollah watched him for several months, and it became known he was a spy," the source said. The man is believed to have been working for the Israelis since the mid-1990s, when he was recruited by Mossad in France and asked to provide information about Hezbollah and the Lebanese Army.

"The suspect was detained earlier this month and is still being interrogated," a spokesman told AFP. "No formal charges have been filed against him and the case is still pending before the military prosecutor."

A security official in Nabatiyeh, about 15 kilometers (nine miles) from the Israeli border, told AFP that on Monday troops raided the suspect's home and a petrol station he owns in the town.

The official said the army probe could lead to other arrests.

In December, the military prosecutor issued arrest warrants for brothers Ali and Youssef Jarrah, from the Bekaa region, on charges of spying for Israel. They were initially detained by Hezbollah, then handed over to authorities.
