Lebanon cautions over Israeli gas discovery

BEIRUT - Lebanese officials have cautioned the Israeli government and operator Noble Energy Inc. not to encroach on Lebanese territory in the wake of a large natural gas discovery made offshore Haifa, according to local press reports.

Public Works, Transportation, Water and Energy Committee Chairman MP Mohammed Qabbani is seeking a precise identification of the area encompassing the discovery, and wants the government to take action to protect Lebanon's offshore territories as necessary.

The discovery, which may be the largest ever made by operator Noble Energy, is in the Matan license offshore Israel. The Tamar No. 1 well, in water depths of around 5,500 feet (1,676 m), was drilled to a total depth of 16,076 feet (4,899 m) by Atwood Oceanics semi Atwood Hunter to test a subsalt lower-Miocene structure in the Levantine basin. Production testing at Tamar will be performed after the well is completed. -With Agencies
