Lebanese president urges for Arabs unity over Palestinian tragedy

BEIRUT -- Lebanese President Michel Suleiman urged on Saturday that the Palestinian tragedy should unite the Arabs and not divide them, National News Agency reported.

Suleiman made the call during a meeting with Iranian chief of the higher national security Said Jilayli at the presidential Palace.

During the meeting, Suleiman stressed the importance of holding an urgent Arab summit to reach a unified Arab stand in supporting the Palestinians, and denouncing the Israeli war.

Jilayli, for his part, told reporters after the meeting that the current developments in the region require consultations and exchange of views between surrounding nations.

He described the Israeli attacks on Gaza as "the terrorist barbaric war carried out against the innocents" which "did not achieve its desired goals."

Any solution to the situation should consider an immediate cease of aggression, and the lift of the imposed blockade, he stressed.

Iran is accused by Israel and the West of supporting and financing Hamas movement in Gaza strip and is also accused of supporting Hezbollah in Lebanon. -Xinhua
