Lebanese leaders call for action to deter Israel

BEIRUT -- The Lebanese Government condemned on Saturday the "genocide" that was committed by Israel against the Palestinian people in Gaza.

Prime Minister Fuad Al-Siniora said in a statement that Israel's latest aggression "is added to its long record of massacres that have been carried out against our brothers, the Palestinian people, in Gaza Strip .." He appealed to the Arab League and top Arab leaders to hold an emergency meeting to take a joint stand in the face of the latest Israeli aggression.

The premier also urged the UN secretary general to condemn the Israeli attacks noting that Tel Aviv "has continously violated human rights."

Also at the local front, MP Saad Al-Hariri, the head of the powerful Future trend, also denounced the "grave humanitarian massacre."

Another leading figure, Sheikh Abdel Amir Qabalan, the Deputy Chairman of the Higher Shiite Council, urged the Arab and Muslim nations to take action to deter Israel and stop it from committing further massacres.

For its part, Hezbollah called on its followers to hold a demonstration in the south of Beirut to protest the deadly Israeli aggression. Nawaf Al-Moussawi, a leading member of the organization, called for supporting the Palestinian people to protect the Muslim sanctities, Arab and Palestinian rigts.

He said Israel is waging a war of liquidation against the natives of Gaza, adding that Tel Aviv is trying to coerce the Palestinians into accepting unjust political settlements. -Kuna
