UNIFIL facilitates Israeli pullout from Lebanese town - Spokesperson

BEIRUT - The U.N. Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) had raised a proposal for Lebanon and Israel several weeks ago to facilitate the latter's withdrawal from Al-Ghajar town, South Lebanon, UNIFIL spokesperson Yasmina Bouziane said on Tuesday.

"UNIFIL Commander Maj. Gen. Claudio Graziano held bilateral talks with both sides separately on the proposal and received positive responses," she told reporters here.

Bouziane voiced hope that the two sides will reach understanding on the implementation of the proposal soon.

"The United Nations attributes great importance to the Israeli withdrawal from the occupied town because this issue is the key to the implementation of the UN Security Council Resolution 1701," she pointed out.

Bouziane refrained from elaborating on the details of the proposal, saying such a thing will not be conducive at present to the Israeli withdrawal.

Senior army officers from Lebanon and Israel met on Monday under aegis of the UNIFIL to mull the issue.
