Lebanese President says Christian reconciliation inevitable

BEIRUT - Lebanese President Michel Suleiman on Thursday affirmed the need for Christian factions in the country to reconcile sooner or later, judging the vast reconciliation efforts witnessed during his short time in office.

In a statement issued by his press office, Suleiman stressed at the presence of former MP Farid Haikal El-Khazen who visited the president in his residence at Baabda, that Christian-Christian reconciliation was a national obligation and that efforts were being carried out for the purpose.

"My reign is a reign of reconciliation and national unity that protect the sovereignty of Lebanon," he stated.

Maronite Patriarch Cardinal Mar Nasrallah Boutros Sfeir yesterday made a visit to Suleiman where he discussed the Christian issue to which the Maronite Patriarchate is taking the liberty in arranging between other factions.

Last month, the Progressive Socialist Party headed by MP Walid Junblatt settled its differences with Hezbollah by the supervision of Minister of Youth and Sports Talal Arslan, with another compromise following a meeting between Hezbollah and Head of the Future Movement MP Saad Al-Hariri. -Kuna
