One killed, two wounded in eastern Lebanon shooting

TAALBAYA, Lebanon - One person was killed and two wounded in a shooting in a mixed village in the Bekaa Valley region in eastern Lebanon, a security official told AFP.

"Abdallah el-Eddawi was seriously injured by a bullet to the head when somebody fired on him from a car that was passing him as he crossed the road with a group in the village of Taalbaya," said the official.

He later died of his injuries, he said, adding that two others were also wounded.

The attack came as rival political figures meet on Tuesday for national reconciliation talks to mend fences and address the thorny issue of the weapons held by the powerful Syrian-backed Shiite Muslim movement Hezbollah.

Eddawi was a member of the Future Movement headed by the leader of the Lebanese parliament's anti-Syrian majority, the Sunni politician Saad Hariri.

In June, three people died in clashes between supporters of Hezbollah and the Future Movement in Taalbaya and the neighbouring village of Saadnayel, which both have mixed Sunni and Shiite communities.

Overnight Sunday, six makeshift bombs exploded in Corniche al-Mazraa, a mixed Sunni-Shiite area of west Beirut, which caused damage but no casualties.

The area was the scene of violent sectarian clashes in May, during fierce fighting between political rivals that killed 65 people and sent Lebanon to the brink of civil war. -AFP
