Suleiman's visit to Syria step on right track - Siniora

CAIRO -- Lebanese Prime Minister Fuad Siniora hailed on Saturday the results of the recent visit to Syria by Lebanese President Michel Suleiman and the summit meeting between Suleiman and Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad.

"The summit is an important step in the right direction," Siniora said in a joint press conference with Egyptian Prime Minister Ahmed Nazif in the coastal city of Alexandria.

"President Suleiman's visit to Syria resulted in great achievements notably the reinstatement of diplomatic ties between the two countries.

"We have to build on these achievements in the coming weeks in order to iron out any remaining problems and establish the bilateral relations on the basis of equality, mutual respect and common interests," the prime minister underscored.

Regarding Lebanese domestic issues, Siniora said President Suleiman would call for holding a national dialogue soon with all previous dialogue partners participating.

"The coming national dialogue sessions will focus on the implementation of the provisions of Doha framework deal notably those relating to Lebanon defense strategy and means to strengthen the state institutions, and the sovereignty and unity of the country.

"The Arab League will take part in the dialogue because the dialogue concerns not only Lebanon but the Arab countries as well. It is not a domestic issue as long as Israel still occupies parts of Lebanon, Syria and Palestine," he explained.

As for his talks with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, Siniora said the talks were "very fruitful." "President Mubarak renewed full support of Egypt to Lebanon in the current hard times," he pointed out.

"The talks with President Mubarak also dealt with the bilateral ties especially in the economic and energy sectors.

"Lebanon, Egypt, Syria and Jordan are building a single power grid which, together with impending gas supplies from Egypt, will help meet Lebanon's rising demand for energy.

"President Mubarak condemned the recent terrorist attack in Sidon, south Lebanon, and affirmed Egypt's support for Lebanon in all economic and political fields," Siniora went on to say.

"The talks covered other regional Arab issues in the current delicate circumstances in the Middle East," the prime minister added.

For his part, Nazif reaffirmed Egypt support to Lebanon, saying his government gave priority to bilateral and regional cooperation especially in the energy area.

The ministers of energy of Egypt, Lebanon, Jordan and Syria will meet in the next week to accelerate the implementation of the power grid project, he revealed.

Nazif congratulated Siniora for the confidence given to the latter's government by the Lebanese parliament and voiced hope that Lebanon would be able to surpass all problems soon. -Kuna
