| Suleiman calls on
Lebanese army to preserve security, peace BEIRUT - President Michel Suleiman called on the Lebanese army preserve security, preventing anyone from upsetting peace in the country. This statement came during the graduation ceremony of the army's 63rd batch of officers, attended by Parliament Speaker Nabieh Berri, Prime Minister Fouad Siniora, in addition to other Arab and foreign diplomats. Suleiman said that the army, throughout the dilemmas which swept Lebanon, was the institution that maintained the unity and security of the state and people. The most difficult thing for the army was to use force against its own people, but when people use arms against each other then the army's obligation is to stop anarchy from prevailing, said the president. He said that differences in political opinions must not lead to harming other people, noting that the Lebanese, after the release of countrymen from Israeli prison, must look forward to unity in order to find solutions for the issues of occupied Shebaa Farms and Kfar Shouba hills. The Lebanese army was formed on August 1, 1945 and now has about 65,000 troops serving in 13 brigades. -Kuna |
