international inaction over Israeli incursions
BEIRUT - Lebanon's militant group Hezbollah Wednesday slammed the international community for failing to act in the face of what it called repeated incursions by Israeli troops. "The Israeli violations are taking place every day on Lebanese soil...in front of everyone, including the United Nations troops" stationed in the south of the country, a statement said. "We demand to know what the position of the security council, the U.N. secretary general (Ban Ki-moon) and Lebanese government is" concerning these incursions, it added. The statement was in reaction to a Lebanese army statement that said Israeli soldiers on Sunday had made a brief incursion into Lebanon near the disputed Shebaa Farms territory. Hezbollah also accused the Israelis of other incursions, namely in the southern border region of Meis el-Jabal and in the southeast region of Ghajar. Israeli jets regularly violate Lebanese airspace, but land or naval violations are rare. An Israeli warship entered Lebanese waters on March 18 before being intercepted by U.N. naval forces. The overflights have drawn criticism from Lebanese authorities and the international community because they violate U.N. Resolution 1701, which ended the 2006 war between the militant group and Israel. Tensions have risen along the Lebanese-Israeli border since a declaration of " open war" by Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah after the February assassination of the Shiite group's top operative Imad Mughniyeh in Damascus. Hezbollah blamed Israel for the killing, but Israel denied any involvement. -AFP |
