Israeli soldier suspected of passing information to Hezbollah

TEL AVIV - Israeli police, military police and security services arrested a career army non-commissioned officer on suspicion he passed military information to the Lebanese Hezbollah guerrilla group, Israeli authorities said Monday night.

The NCO, who was not identified, was arrested one month ago, for allegedly giving Hezbollah information on Israeli troop deployments, in return for being allowed to smuggle drugs into Israel from Lebanon.

Two other suspects, a resident of Nazareth and a resident of a village in northern Israel, were also nabbed while in possession of two kilogrammes of heroin, with an estimated street value of one million shekels (350,000 dollars.)

An indictment will probably be filed against the suspects in the coming days, Israeli media reported.

Israel Radio says the soldier is suspected of trading military secrets for drugs. The secrets include placement of Israeli military units.

The military would say only that a soldier in the professional army was arrested a month ago, and the inquiry is still going on.

There have been several cases in past years of soldiers caught dealing in drugs across the Lebanese border. -Agencies
