An-Nahar

Who tried to burn Lebanon last Sunday?

Initial testimonies say a Shiite from Jbeil area was in charge of the army post in Mar Mikhael when Sundays incident broke out, An-Nahar reported. The army post there was static and did not need additional forces when a number of young men and boys started to burn tyres nearby. Elements manning the post told protestors the army will remove the tyres and re-open the road. The reply was an attack with sticks and stones on the soldiers of whom one was wounded. The protestors also tried to disarm one of the soldiers who resisted despite being surrounded. They also tried to climb to a military vehicle. Responding, soldiers started shooting in the air to dispel rioters and pull back to a rear position to protect their weapons. At that point, shooting from the Chiyah direction started, and traces of bullets began to show on the vehicles, which compelled the army to shoot back, inflicting a number of civilian casualties. The same testimonies further pointed out that the building that was pictured as being the source of the bullets was in Chiyah, from where the protestors came, and not from Ain El- Roumanah. Concluding, An-Nahar said this puts the probe before a big question: Who tried to burn Lebanon last Sunday?
