| Lahoud may take
constitutional steps over presidency - spokesman BEIRUT -- Lebanese President Emile Lahoud will consult all Lebanese groups about possible steps he might take if no consensus was reached over the planned presidential election, a presidential spokesman said here Tuesday. "President Lahoud's decision will be purely Lebanese, and will not come under pressure by some internal and external parties," Lebanese Presidential Spokesman and Lahoud's Information Advisor Rafiq Shlala told Kuwait News Agency (KUNA). A procedure to be taken by the president in case of no consensus will be constitutional, he said, emphasizing Lahoud's firm belief in the "Formula for Living Together in Lebanon" and prevention of infighting and confrontation among the Lebanese. But, he enunciated emphatic opposition to the election of a president by a just-51-percent majority as unconstitutional. Hezbollah Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah has recently called on the incumbent Lahoud to take steps to salvage the country should the political forces fail to agree on a presidential candidate on the crucial November 21 parliamentary session. The Hezbollah leader, in remarks marking the "Day of Martyrs" in a ceremony in southern Beirut on Sunday, said Lahoud "should not allow a group of thieves and killers to follow the American project in Lebanon." "We will follow with patience these sensitive days, to have a president of the republic whom the Lebanese, rather than the Americans, want," he added. -Kuna |
