Lebanese presidency battle begins

BEIRUT, Lebanon- The presidency battle began in Lebanon and political groups here and abroad started talks Wednesday, a few days after the parliamentary by-elections.

Political sources said several names were proposed for the post, including Army Commander General Michel Suleiman and Governor of Lebanon Bank Riyadh Salameh.

Saudi Ambassador Abdulaziz Khoja had held talks on the presidency issue yesterday with senior Lebanese officials, including Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri and Prime Minister Fuad Siniora.

France, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and the Arab League will start soon their efforts to persuade the different Lebanese parties to select a president that was approved by all, it added.

Salemeh is the most accepted by all sides, the source noted.

The selection period for the new president starts on September 25 and ends on November 23. -Kuna
