Lebanon's Bhamdoun misses Kuwaiti summer vacationers
By Ali Nasser

BEIRUT, Lebanon -- Regardless of the small number of Kuwaiti tourists, locals in Lebanon's mountainous city of Buhamdon, repeat "Buhamdoun misses Kuwaiti" tourists who used to come here in huge numbers during previous summer vacations.

Since the beginning of the month Buhamdon, 25 kilometers from Beirut, shyly started receiving tourists. Restaurants and hotels there used to be packed this time of the year, with Kuwaitis many of whom considered the city a second home.

No doubt security instability, political deadlocks and tensions in the country played a key role in all this, impacting tremendously the summer all over the country, and not just Buhamdon.

Wandering through Buhamdon's main road, one will immediately realize that Kuwaiti tourists are missing; many of the stores and restaurants that used to be crammed with them are closed.

Ellias Nemr , owner of "Buhamdon's Heaven", says his restaurant now depends on 70 percent of income on the natives, noting that Kuwaiti tourists have begun to show up slowly in the second week of the month.

Last year losses, he adds, were huge as a result of the situation in Lebanon, noting that he "doesn't blame those who have not come to visit the area," but in the meantime, hoping that if stability persists through August things will get better.

According to Nemr Buhamdon is currently witnessing a 90 percent increase of activities during at weekends. During normal days it's "between 30 to 40 percent." Many Kuwaiti tourists have got used to traveling to Lebanon over past decades, a lot of them even owns apartments and houses in Buhamdon's Mountain, a 1000 meter above the sea level. -Kuna
