| Syria criticizes Sarkozy
for branding Hezbollah as 'terrorist' DAMSCUS - Syria's state-run newspaper Wednesday criticized French President Nicolas Sarkozy for branding the Lebanese Hezbollah as a "terrorist organization."Sarkozy, in a meeting Monday with the families of three captive Israeli soldiers, including two seized by the Shiite Muslim group last summer, expressed the view that Hezbollah needed to renounce terrorism. Tishrin newspaper, in its editorial Wednesday, questioned how "concepts and principles are turned upside down and those who struggle for freedom and independence are turned to be terrorists?" The newspaper urged France to play an "honest and even-handed" role in the region, saying bias toward a certain Lebanese side was an "incorrect choice." Tishrin added that "hopes are still pinned on France to put things back on their right course." France has invited Lebanese Hezbollah to participate in a conference of 14 Lebanese factions in Paris this weekend to address the country's political deadlock. -DPA |
