| Khatami: Lebanon entitled
to partial rejection of UN resolutions TEHERAN, July 15 (IRNA) - Lebanon President Mohammad Khatami here Thursday referred to dismissal of Hizbollah's disarmament by the Lebanese people and raised the question as why Israel disregards all UN resolutions, while Lebanon is not entitled to reject part of an international resolution violating its national interests. Speaking to al-Arabia TV network, in an exclusive interview, hatami expressed his belief that the UN Security Council's Resolution 1559 cannot rule out the presence of the powerful and armed Hizbollah troops in Lebanon. The chief executive pointed to the wall constructed by Israel in the occupied Palestinian territory as a catastrophe and said that it has caused many problems for the Palestinians. "The French President Jacques Chirac once told me that he has informed Israeli officials that such a measure cannot be tolerated. "A Palestinian citizen intending to meet his brother living at a distance of 30 meters away from himself should walk several kilometers in order to see him," he added. The president noted that the wall has actually been proved to be useless and that Israel should not only withdraw from the occupied territory, but the Palestinians should be allowed to return to their homeland in order to determine their own destiny themselves. "The experiences of the past five decades have proved that less the rights of the Palestinians as the original owners of the territory are restored, any project of the type is eventually doomed to failure," he added. Concerning his own proposed project dubbed `The Great Islamic Middle East' and the US initiative of `The Greater Middle East', the president regretted that the national potentials have not been used optimally. "My initiative of `Dialogue Among Civilizations' could have been quite effective in the world. Though it was welcomed on the international scene, it was not sufficiently supported on the domestic level. I intend to follow up the issue," he added. The chief executive said that just as he took office as president with great love for the people, he will end his term in a similar way and added that he will continue to serve the glorious Iranian nation. At the end of the interview, the president voiced a few words in Arabic, saying that he will visit the Arabic countries in future to improve his knowledge on the language. |
