| Cabinet formation,
Geagea's release take positive turn Premier-Designate
Fouad Seniora was reported Friday to have broken the ice with Gen. Aoun for a new dialogue
over the formation of Lebanon's new government as Druze leader called a truce in the
Moukhtara-Rabieh propaganda bombardment and Saad Hariri jetted back to Beirut from Saudi
Arabia. The Beirut developments took place under the eerie shadow that was cast on all capitals of the world by the terrorist subway and bus bombings in London in which at least 52 people were killed and 700 injured, according to latest estimates.(Details of the London massacre are available on the world site) "You have to form a new government with me or without me soonest. Let's get this thing over with," Aoun was quoted by the Beirut press Friday as having told Seniora when the premier-designate called the General by telephone late Thursday. "We want a partner in the government," Seniora responded. "Then, let us start with an accord amongst ourselves first on the policy statement of the new government," Aoun replied. The media said the two sides agreed to begin a prompt dialogue that would be accentuated by a Seniora visit to Rabieh within 24 hours. "There must be a prior consensus on the government policies in all fields to avert the specter of the cabinet blown apart from within," said Aoun's parliament bloc member Ibrahim Kenaan. "We do not want to get into an exploding government." In an apparent effort to create a better climate for Seniora's mission, Jumblat has ordered the Progressive Socialist Party and asked all his allies in parliament to refrain from any attacks on Gen. Aoun. "I do not object to the General's representation in the new government according to his size in parliament," Jumblat told Hariri's Al Mustaqbal newspaper. He warned, however, that the majority should guard against a potential alliance of minorities to get the so-called 'subversive one third 'of the cabinet. "The coming hours will witness a marked progress toward the formation of the new government," Marwan Hamadeh told An Nahar. "The premier-designate will renew dialogue with the support of all his allies to reach a collective result." There was no immediate word upon Saad Hariri's return to Beirut whether he would make another visit to Gen. Aoun at his Rabieh residence soon. Hariri spent a week at his house in the Saudi capital of Riyadh with his wife and two children. (Naharnet) |
