| UN calls anew for Lebanon
to implement full sovereignty UNITED
NATIONS, June 30 (AFP) - The UN Security Council repeated its call Thursday for Beirut to
implement full sovereignty throughout its territory and to dismantle militias a day after
a flare-up in the Shebaa Farms border area.
Security Council members expressed "serious concerns" after Israeli air strikes
Wednesday targeting Hezbollah fighters, and again Thursday in the disputed border area.
Members of the Security Council "reiterate their call on the government of Lebanon to
extend its control over all of its territory, including through the deployment of Lebanese
armed forces, to exert its monopoly on the use of force and to put an end to all attacks
emanating from its territory," French
ambassador Jean-Marc de La Sabliere who presides the Council told reporters.
"Members of the Security Council urged all parties to fully respect the Blue Line,
refrain from violation of it and to exercise restraint," he said.
De La Sabliere in reply to a reporter's question said that, according to UN information,
Hezbollah appeared to have made the first move in provoking the incident. |
