UN envoy to arrive in Lebanon to oversee truce

UNITED NATIONS - Michael Williams, the special advisor of the United Nations Secretary General, is due to arrive in Beirut next week to oversee the implementation of UN resolution 1701 which ended 33 days of war between Israel and the Lebanese Shiite movement Hezbollah last August, a UN spokeswoman said Friday.

"Mr. Williams will arrive next week and will hold talks with top Lebanese officials and others concerned with the implementation of resolution 1701."

He will meet top officials and others concerned with the resolution, in line with the preparation for the report on Resolution 1701."

UN Secretary General Ban-Ki-moon is to report to the UN Security Council in mid March to brief it on compliance with the truce resolution.

Williams' visit will be the third by a UN official since the resolution was adopted in August 2006. The resolution ended an Israeli offensive on Lebanon which started on July 12 after Hezbollah captured two Israeli soldiers.

Under the UN resolution, a beefed-up UN force along with some 15,000 Lebanese army soldiers are monitoring the Israeli-Lebanese border.

Resolution 1701 laid down the progressive withdrawal of the Israeli army from south Lebanon and its replacement by a UN-backed Lebanese army deployment, which have already taken place. It also demanded the disarming of militia movements, a reference to Hezbollah.

Hezbollah used to monitor and maintain military bases along the Israeli-Lebanese border, since Israel withdrew from southern Lebanon in 2000. -Agencies
