Berri to set 'working group' to discuss Hariri tribunal

Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri will set up a "working group" of law experts to discuss the UN-Lebanon agreement on Hariri Tribunal, the daily Al-Hayat reported on Sunday.

In the working group, rival political parties could discuss the UN-Lebanon agreement on an international tribunal to try suspects in the 2005 assassination of former Premier Rafik Hariri and related crimes, said the report.

Citing prominent Lebanese political sources, the report said that Berri had intensified contacts aimed at creating the working group, where the Hezbollah-led opposition could "suggest amendments" to the tribunal bylaw.

It added the pro-government March 14 coalition has approved Berri's initiative.

The UN on Tuesday signed a treaty creating the international tribunal. The tribunal would have a mandate to try suspects in the Feb. 14, 2005 assassination of Hariri who was killed along with 22 other people in a massive bombing explosion in downtown Beirut. -Xinhua
