Arab League leader in Syria for talks on Lebanon

DAMSCUS - The Arab League Secretary General Amr Mussa was in Syria Sunday for talks with Syrian President Bashar Assad on regional developments and ways of finding a way out of the current crisis in Lebanon.

Mussa was meeting Assad and Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al- Moallem.

He said the Arab League initiative with regard to the Lebanese political crisis were still underway, adding that the Arab League, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Syria and the concerned Lebanese parties were coordinating their efforts.

Mussa said he hoped the Lebanese crisis would soon come to an end and that he would visit Lebanon in the near future without setting a date.

His trip to Syria came in the framework of the Arab League's political consultations with various Arab parties in an effort to solve the Lebanese crisis.

Deadly clashes which took place on January 25 during a student riot and which left at least six people dead and more than 200 wounded have raised fears that Lebanon is heading towards a civil war if the political crisis is not solved by diplomatic means.
