Lebanon's anti-Syrian majority to mark Hariri anniversary

Beirut - Lebanon's March 14 anti-Syrian coalition called on Friday for a 'massive gathering' to commemorate the second anniversary of the assassination for former premier Rafik Hariri.

'We call on the Lebanese who loved Hariri to commemorate the second anniversary with a massive gathering in Martyrs' Square in downtown Beirut,' where Hariri was buried, said a March 14 statement.

Hariri was killed in a massive car bomb blast along with 20 others on February 14, 2005. The attack was widely blamed on Syria and its Lebanese allies.

The opposition, which is led by the militant movement Hezbollah, has been holding a sit-in on the northern part of the Martyr Square, where the March 14 group will hold their rally, to force the anti- Syrian government headed by Premier Fouad Seniora to resign.

On January 23 and 25 street riots between the pro-Syrian opposition and government followers led to the deaths of six people and the wounding of more 250 others.

Many fear that the opposing forces will clash again on the anniversary.

The Lebanese and international outcry over Hariri's assassination forced Syria, Lebanon's then power broker, to withdraw its forces from its smaller neighbour after 30 years of military presence.
