Lebanese child killed by bomblet explosion in south Lebanon

A Lebanese child was killed and three others wounded on Wednesday by the explosion of an Israeli cluster bomb in southern Lebanon, Lebanese police said.

The four children were playing in a field in the region of Marjeyoun when they accidentally touched a bomblet which blew up, killing a 12-year-old boy and injuring the others, the source said.

The new casualties raised the toll to 15 the number of civilians killed by Israeli cluster bombs left in southern Lebanon since the war between Israel and Hezbollah came to an end on August 14.

So far some almost 90 civilians were wounded in various explosions of Israeli cluster bombs in southern Lebanon.

“They (bomblets) are scattered everywhere and we call on the people to avoid going to fields near their houses or areas that will endanger children,” the Lebanese police said in a statement.

The Israeli newspaper Ha’aretz reported earlier this month that the Israeli army has left some 1.2 million bomblets in Lebanon.

Israel launched on July 12 a massive war on Lebanon in response to Hezbollah’s capturing of two Israeli soldiers on the same day. The war ended by a UN-brokered ceasefire.(DPA)
