| Hezbollah accuses U.S. of
trying to ruin its alliance with Amal Tyre, Lebanon - Lebanon's Shiite Hezbollah guerilla organization accused the United States Saturday of trying to ruin its alliance with the Shiite Amal party. Hezbollah member Sheikh Nabil Qawouq said during a news conference in the southern port city of Tyre the American Embassy in Beirut "provided many temptations and offers to Hezbollah and Amal to break their alliance." The group and Amal, led by Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri, have joined forces in the predominantly-Shiite south for the legislative polls to form the next 128-seat parliament. Around 670,000 voters in the south will elect 17 representatives from 47 candidates Sunday. They are vying for parliamentary seats in the second of four election stages. Qawouq insisted that America was "disturbed" by the Hezbollah-Amal alliance, saying the U.S. embassy "has repeatedly tried to end this partnership so that it would strike against each party, but has failed to succeed." Lebanon's elections started in Beirut on May 29 and will continue for the next three weekends. (UPI) |
