| Rival clans clash in
eastern Lebanon: police BAALBEK, Lebanon -
Gunmen clashed Friday with assault rifles and rocket-propelled grenades in the eastern
city of Baalbek, apparently over old feuds between rival local clans, police said.
There were no reports of casualties from the clash which broke out at the western entrance
of the city in the eastern Beqaa Valley district, apparently between the Jaafar and
Zaayter clans, they said.
Old feuds between the two clans have cost the lives of at least six people in the last few
years in a region plagued by vendetta attacks.
The clashes were taking place ahead of the June 12 general elections in the Beqaa Valley,
the third step in four-stage legislative polls. |
