51 candidates compete in Beirut election

Some 51 candidates will be competing for a seat representing the electoral constituency of Beirut in the 128-member Lebanese parliament.

The deadline for filing candidature applications to run for the 19 seats representing the Lebanese capital expired at midnight Friday.

The four-phase general elections are to be begin in Beirut on May 29, followed by South Lebanon on June 5, Biqaa and Mount Lebanon on June 12, and north Lebanon on June 19.

The list led by Saad Hariri, son of slain former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri, is expected to achieve victory.

The candidates include representatives from Hezbollah, the Progressive Socialist Party of Druze leader Walid Jumblat in addition to Hariri's al-Mustaqbal Movement.

In mainly-Shiite southern Lebanon, rival Shiite groups Hezbollah and Amal Movement which is led by Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri, announced joint electoral lists.

International observers will monitor the elections, the first to be held after the withdrawal of Syrian troops and intelligence agents from Lebanon. (with UPI)
