UN's Annan meets with Lebanese PM

UNITED NATIONS, May 6 (AFP) - UN Secretary General Kofi Annan on Friday met with Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati.

The two discussed upcoming elections in Lebanon, implementation of Security Council resolution 1559 and establishing a special UN commission into the slaying of former Lebanese prime minister Rafiq Hariri and 20 others, a UN spokesman said.

Annan reiterated his call for full implementation of resolution 1559 and noted that Mikati welcomed UN electoral assistance and European Union electoral observers.

"The secretary general commended the prime minister for his efforts to ensure that the elections will be held on schedule and in a free and credible manner," said the UN spokesman.
