| Two Israeli Arabs briefly
kidnapped by Hezbollah: Israel JERUSALEM -
Agents from the Lebanese Shiite militia Hezbollah infiltrated northern Israel and
kidnapped two Israeli Arabs from a border village, Israeli security sources said Thursday.
The two men, Mohammed Meki and Nawaf Murhej from Ghajar village which lies on Israel's
northern border with Lebanon, were allegedly kidnapped on April 7 and taken to Lebanon
where they were interrogated for four days before being released on April 11.
Details of their kidnapping emerged upon their return when they were taken for
investigation by Israeli police and agents from the Shin Beth internal security service.
They described how they were kidnapped in the dead of night from their village and taken
to Lebanon where they were held in bad conditions and treated violently by their Lebanese
interrogators.
But their captors had not asked them to carry out security-related missions against Israel
and they were later released, the sources said.
Israel, which pulled out of south Lebanon in 2000 under Hezbollah fire, has long accused
the Lebanese militant group of involvement in unrest in the Palestinian territories but
has so far provided little proof. |
