| Lahoud says diregarding
Syria, Lebanon won't benefit peace Lebanese
President Emile Lahoud has said that Lebanon and Syria are a source of stability in the
Middle East region and disregarding (their role) "will not benefit the peace",
according to Al Balad Tuesday. Lahoud's term was extended last September for another 3 years at the behest of Syria, the main foreign powerbroker in the country. The move led to the drafting of UN Security Council resolution 1559, which called on Syria, without naming it, to remove its estimated 15,000 troops from the country and stop meddling in its domestic affairs. According to the paper, Lahoud reiterated his condemnation of terrorism and called for "uprooting the causes of extremism and the violent acts that spring from it". He also voiced Lebanon's stance, which rejects the resettlement of Palestinian refugees residing in host countries, including Lebanon. |
