Hairi says elections will decide size of political groups

Former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri has warned that attempts are underway to undermine national unity, stressing that downsizing political groups and politicians was in the hands of the people only, Hariri's own Al Mustaqbal newspaper reported Monday.

"Those who are hitting out at the national unity might not be aware of what they are doing because national unity is a pillar for Lebanon and at the core of its stability," Hariri said at a function for the Armenian Ramgavar Party. "We are attached to tour national unity... What unites us is a lot and what separates us is just too small to be seen," Hariri added.

He said that there are attempts to belittle and downsize national symbols, but stressed that "only the people could downsize political groups and politicians at the polls... Only the ballots will define the true size and weight of each group and person, and not any other side or party regardless if it were big or small," Hariri said.

He noted that he will have frank and open comments on the new election law if it were tailored to suit certain people and groups at the expense of others.
