Syrian radio outlines mission of Lebanon's new government

A commentary on the state-run Syrian radio, in the meantime, outlined the tasks and missions of the next Lebanese government, with a priority to further deepen and consolidate Lebanese-Syrian relations and confront the U.N. Security Council Resolution 1559, An Nahar reported Monday.

"Great and important challenges await the new Lebanese government requiring it to close national ranks and work rigorously and seriously on solving the problems looming for the Lebanon," the radio said. "What is required first and foremost from the new government is to deepen and strengthen the relations of brotherhood, cooperation and coordination between Lebanon and Syria because what threatens Lebanon also threatens Syria," it said.

It stressed that the "will of the Lebanese people and its unity remain stronger than ever despite attempts by suspicious people to drive a wedge... Which makes a top priority for the next government to confront and deal with the consequences of Resolution 1559, which threatens Lebanon's security, independence and sovereignty."

Resolution 1559 called on Syria without naming it to pull out its estimated 15,000 troops from Lebanon and stop meddling in internal Lebanese affairs. The resolution drafted in a joint effort between the U.S. and France also demanded the Lebanese government disband local and foreign armed groups in reference to Hizbullah and armed Palestinian factions.

On his part, Maronite Patriarch Nasrallah Sfeir said during Sunday mass that he hoped Lebanon will get a government that will put an end to corruption and overall deterioration and regain the confidence of the public. "We hope the new government will restore public confidence in the state and will result in having Lebanon regain its high standard and position among nations," Sfeir was quoted as saying, An Nahar reported Monday.
