Hundreds gather to remember Sabra and
Shatila
Hundreds of Palestinians and a few Italian activists marked the 21st anniversary on
Tuesday of the massacres at Beiruts Sabra and Shatila camps in which as many as
1,500 Palestinian refugees were killed.
They gathered at the site of the mass grave at the entrance to Shatila.
The massacre by Israeli-allied Christian militiamen of old men and women and children
lasted three days, following the assassination of President-elect Bashir Gemayel on Sept.
14, 1982.
Israels army had invaded Lebanon, and was at the time deployed in force around the
camps. An Israeli parliamentary commission found the then-defense minister, now Prime
Minister Ariel Sharon, indirectly responsible for the massacre.
A procession of about 500 Palestinians and 60 Italians then marched to the camps
cemetery, where old women carried pictures of slain family members. AFP Patriarch begins pastoral trip to Europe

It added that the government should show its neutrality not in a by-election, but in
a fully fledged election contest like the one due for 2005, in which candidates allied
