Hizbullah says Bekaa blast was ordnance disposal
Hizbullah on Monday said a huge blast that rocked a Syrian-Lebanese border area the
previous night, sending ambulances rushing to the scene, was caused by its guerrillas
detonating leftover Israeli bombs.
Various media reports said the massive explosion was caused either by military
training or Hizbullahs testing of a locally made missile.
The explosion occurred late Sunday near Janta, a small farming village 30 kilometers
southeast of the city of Baalbek.
Hizbullah media official Sheikh Hassan Ezzeddine said the blast was caused by the group
detonating shells and ordnance left behind by Israeli occupation forces before their
withdrawal in 2000.
He declined to comment on reports claiming the explosion resulted from testing of a
locally made missile.
Hizbullah exploded shells and ordnance left behind by the Israeli enemy when it
raided the Bekaa region. These shells posed a danger to public safety and had to be
destroyed, Ezzeddine said. ? AP
