Daily Star correspondent Speaker Nabih Berri
expressed his gratitude to Kuwait over the weekend for its part in reviving the
South.
Speaking in Hanin Sunday at the inauguration of three miniature towers, designed to
resemble the Gulf states famous landmarks, Berri said they were meant as a gesture
of gratitude to Kuwait for helping to rebuild the towns of Hanin, Sojod,
Yarin, Mirwaheen, Zalloutieh, Umm Toute, Rshaf, Ain Arab and Wadi Khansa.
The structures, which were funded almost entirely by the Council of the South, were
erected on land donated by residents as an expression of their gratitude to the Kuwaiti
Fund for Economic Development, responsible for assisting in the reconstruction in the
area.
Berri said that the liberation of the South was a dream that became a reality.
On a day like today in 1967, Israel was preparing to launch another one of its
offensives but the Arabs were busy with their disputes, he added.
The result was the June defeat, which took place at around this time in 1967,
berri said, adding that the Jewish state was making plans to invade Lebanon in the
summer of 1982 as well. Berris audience included the head of the Kuwaiti Fund
for Economic Development, Badr Homeidi, and Public Works Minister Najib Mikati.
Berri also warned that Israel was now poised to invade Gaza.
For his part, Homeidi conveyed the greetings of Kuwaits emir, Sheikh Jaber Ahmad
Sabah, Kuwaitis Crown Prince Sheikh Saad Abdullah Sabah as well as other top
officials.
The Kuwaiti visitor recalled that two days after the Israeli withdrawal the Kuwaiti ruler
decided to contribute $20 million toward the reconstruction of southern towns.
